Alcohol and driving

Everyone knows by now: alcohol and driving don’t mix! Responsible for a significant proportion of road accidents – including many fatalities – impaired driving has become one of the workhorses of road safety and law enforcement in our country. In many countries, especially in the United States and some European countries, driving while intoxicated is one of the biggest causes of accidents, after driving while using a cell phone. There are so many fatalities every year as a result of this irresponsible behavior. However, there are still many people who often drive under the influence of alcohol.

Drunk driving: danger around the corner

Often combined with excessive speed and reckless risk-taking, the blood alcohol level of motorists is a real scourge. The drunk driver is a danger to himself, his passengers and all other road users. The level of blood alcohol content is the basic criterion in determining whether a person is fit to drive or not. Thus, even if the person finished his drink yesterday, he is not necessarily fit to drive because his blood still contains alcohol. Elemental alcohol in the blood, above a certain level, can cause loss of concentration while driving.

Even with relatively low consumption, alcohol has been shown to decrease coordination, concentration and resistance to fatigue. In addition, a drunk driver often tends to drive more aggressively and therefore more dangerous. It maximizes the risks associated with speeding, overtaking … This type of behavior is unfortunately often found among young people, where it is combined with a lack of driving experience and a tendency to want to impress friends.

To combat the problem, the authorities have put in place a real repressive arsenal: fixed fine, investigation in the event of an accident with verification of the alcohol level in the blood, withdrawal of points or licenses … The code of conduct considers moreover, the fact of getting behind the wheel drunk as an offense, not as a simple breach subject to fine.

An increased risk of accident and severe penalties in the event of an inspection

It is a criminal offense punishable by law to drive a vehicle in a state of intoxication. Failure to comply with the Highway Code on this point automatically results in the loss of some points on the license, as well as a withdrawal of six months to one year from it.

However, it is possible, under certain conditions, to register for a recovery course, in order to have your license credited. These awareness courses are also an opportunity to raise awareness: even a glass of alcohol dramatically increases the risk of a road accident!

Fines, internships, even imprisonment: there are many ways to deter motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol. But it is also and above all raising awareness of driving safety that can overcome the remaining resistance. No, driving while drinking is not acceptable behavior! Hopefully this article can wake you up and anyone else who still sometimes drives drunk.
