There are millions of different species on our planet, and we still haven’t explored them all. Our planet is constantly changing, and many animals are adapting to the new environment.
This leads to the development of new species that are quite strange to look at since we are not used to seeing them. Just like TwinSpires Edge underrated list of NBA players that you can find if you click here, these animals are not as well unknown but they play a great part in their ecosystems.
In today’s article, we will focus only on the cute animals that are very rare, and we bet that you still haven’t spotted them outdoors.

- Aardwolf
Despite the name combination of Aardvarks and Wolds, these species have nothing in common with them. Their name means “earth wolf,” which comes from their voracious appetite for ground insects.
They live in southern Africa, and their closest relatives are hyenas. Their favorite snack is hundreds of thousands of termites, which boosts their protein and moisture levels, allowing them to live without any issue, even in some of the least inhabitant places.
- Pink Fairy Armadillo
Most people know what Armadillo looks like, but this animal is quite unique. First of all, it is the smallest of all armadillos and can only be found in the sand plains of Argentina. It has a strangely sugary pink color, and they are unbelievably cute.
Its size is less than 11cm long and features a pink shell and silky white fur at the back. At the moment, their natural habitat is being lost to agriculture, and organizations are doing everything to make sure the species survives.
- Sunda Colugo
Sunda Colugo or otherwise known as the Flying Lemurs is a gentle creature that has disproportioned eyes, just like in animated movies. Their closest relatives are primates, and despite the name, it has nothing to do with the lemur family.
Most of the time, they are attached to the trunks of trees in the jungles of South Asia, and their brown and grey fur is great for camouflage.
The young ones hold onto the mother’s belly even when she glides and moves around, looking for food.
- Raccoon Dog
Despite the name and very similar looks, raccoon dogs are not related to raccoons at all. This is an Asian dog breed, also known as Tanuki and their closes relatives are foxes.
Raccoon dogs are not something new, and they were seen in Japanese folklore since ancient times. In fact, many Japanese homes still have a small statue of raccoon dogs on their bookshelves.
- Quoll
If you see a Quoll, you are not going to jump in fear, just like when you see a rat. In fact, their beautiful spotted coat makes them one of the cutest animals on the planet.
They can be found in Australia and some parts of Papua New Guinea. They are mostly interested in small birds, insects, and lizards.
These species are similar to ferrets, which are common house pets even from some of the NFL stars like the former player Visanthe Shiancoe. They are only smaller and covered with dots.
Sadly, quoll numbers have been dramatically dropping over the past couple of years. Thankfully, there are breeding programs run by big organizations that are working hard into re-populating the area.

- Margay
This wild cat is unlike you’ve ever seen before. It lives in South America and leads a solitary life looking for rats, tree frogs, and squirrels. They have big eyes and a long tail, so you cannot mistake them for an Ocelot.
Sadly they are very rare and still suffer from the illegal wildlife trade that was very popular back in the 90s. That’s why they are not classified as “near threatened” species.
- Ili Pika
These species were first discovered back in 1983 in China, and they are so rare that there wasn’t any evidence of their existence until 2014. They are locally known as the “magic rabbit,” and experts predict that there are less than 1,000 in existence.
This short-eared rabbit with a teddy bear face looks very cute. Its main diet is grass, herbs, and mountain plants. They spend all summer collecting food to have enough to survive the winter.
