- Silicon Valley (2014)
What it is about-The TV comedy show follows a group of glamorous and introverted computer programmers living in a Bay Area startup incubator oriented towards the tech industry and its pride.
What can you learn-The show perfectly captures the details of the Valley: sweatshirts, bonuses at work, tech offices, and the promise of stock options in the middle of a high-tech gold rush. The show consulted with real techies, including writer Mike Judge, who worked as an engineer in the Valley in the 1980s to make sure they were as close to the real thing as possible. - Halt and Catch Fire (2014)
What it is about- The show, starring Lee Pace, follows the virtual executives of exIBM, which began in the 1980s and tended to redesign the companies’ computer technology with the help of brilliant programmers.
What can you learn- As the Verge reports, Pace’s Joe Macmillan has all the familiar traits of a geek tech creator like Steve Jobs. The show uses a different technological archetype but does so in a way that paints a human picture of the internet age and technological innovations at the time. - The Great Hack (2019)
What it is about- The documentary focuses on the FacebookCambridge Analytica scandal that collects data without the consent of millions of Facebook users.
What can you learn-The 2018 data scandal offers a warning story about how social media is using consumer data as a weapon and the impact these companies can have on the political landscape (in this case, the 2016 US presidential election).
- The Social Network (2010)
What it is about- In this award-winning film, the outstanding Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is portrayed as a Harvard student and one of the youngest billionaires in the world.
What can you learn-The film helps to understand Zuckerberg and the company’s early days, but as The Verge in 2017 pointed out, the criticism depicted in the film seems outdated and unpretentious in retrospect. It’s been 10 years since the series release, and a lot has changed since then, including the 2018 Cambridge Analytica data scandal that put Facebook and its leaders at the forefront of a great tech lash.
- Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates (2019)
What it is about- The original 3-part Netflix documentary, which also includes insights from his wife Melinda, explores the brilliant minds and goals of the former CTO for the future after Microsoft, including the pursuit of climate change solutions. What can you learn- Reviews of the biographical film praise Ashton Kutcher’s views, but criticize him for his shallow and incomplete portrayal of Apple’s pioneering leader. But, according to a 2014 Verge review, it still reflects some interesting internal cultural elements that will please Apple fanatics.
- Steve Jobs (2015)
What it is about- The 2015 big studio movie covers Apple’s three mega product launches and ends with the 1988 iMac presentation. The film follows Michael Fassbender, who introduces the groundbreaking New Balance Wearing model.
What can you learn-The film highlights the company’s most important product launches in the 1980s, but it also covers details of Jobs’ personal life, including his relationship with Jobs’ daughter Lisa. Jobs died in 2011.
