It is never an easy decision to make when it is becoming apparent that a loved one can no longer be fully independent. Even worse that they may need full-time care.
But there is a lot of options to make life comfortable and ensure that they are being given the highest level of care possible while in a safe and recognizable setting.
In-Home
If it cost allows there are a great deal of in-home caregiver benefits, proving this can often one of the best choices as it affords an individual the comfort of still living in their own home.
There is a caregiver that can help them with any of their needs or the “Activities of Daily Living” the ADLs. Those include;
- Meal Prep
- BathinG
- Dressing
But they do not limit their services to that. They can also help with things like transportation and medical appointments.

Adult Day Programs
These programs are a little less intensive of a care program. Made for those not needing continuous care, but that is not safe staying home the entire day alone.
Adult day programs allow for social integration and interaction.
Independent Living
These are apartments or condos within a larger community setting. The major benefit being the social integration. Often there are social programs and activities arranged within these communities.
These arrangements of having the dignity of risk in aged care, have shown to help ward off depression and feelings of isolation as individuals grow older. By continuing social and recreational opportunities it keeps residents active and engaged.
But because they are an independent living situation, they do not have specialized government aid.
Assisted Living Facilities
When individuals are not necessarily able to live safely on their own, completely, but do not need full-time care there is the option of assisted living.
They would be living in their own private apartments and would be able to have their own time to themselves, a small kitchen area as well. The facilities do often provide meals to the residents though.
In these facilities, there is round the clock assistance with medication, housekeeping, meals, and any other regular daily needs. The idea of assisted living is the blend the care with the independence and offer aid when it is needed.

Nursing Homes
These tend to be the most structured and what most imagine when referring to “elder care”. Nursing homes are long-term care facilities that are offering around the clock care for elders that are 100% or near 100% dependent on caregivers.
Licensed nurses are available 24/7 to provide any care needed. While the majority is long term there are some offering short-term rehabilitative care for surgery and illness.
These are specialized care and federally regulated so there are many government support and insurance programs that work into the payment and provisions related to nursing homes.
Multi-Layered Senior Care
Just as there are needs for every person there need to be different systems of care. As our loved ones get older the discussion of their care needs to be made, but they should always be a part of it and their independence should always be considered as well.
