LSU may have won college football’s national title last season. But if you look at a list of the best college football teams this season, you’ll find that the Tigers are nowhere near the top of it.
LSU has struggled to a 3-3 record to start the year. And it has become painfully obvious to Tigers fans that the team is not one of the top college football teams in 2020.
So, which college football programs are the cream of the crop this season? Well, the college football season is still playing itself out, which means that there is bound to be a ton of movement towards the top of the college football standings.
But as of right now, it does appear as though there are a few college football teams that are just better than everyone else. Take a look at the top college football teams below.
Alabama
You can’t make a list of the best college football teams and not include Alabama at the top of it. Even though the Crimson Tide have been in a bit of a slump by their standards in recent years—they haven’t won a national title since 2017—they remain at the top of the college football standings year after year.
Thus far this season, Alabama has once again established its dominance over almost all of the other college football teams by steamrolling Georgia, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Kentucky, and others. Coach Nick Saban has Alabama firing on all cylinders, and it would be shocking if they didn’t make the College Football Playoff this season.

Notre Dame
Is Notre Dame for real this season? That’s the question that a lot of people asked through the first half of the year as they beat up on teams like Florida State, Louisville, and Pittsburgh.
They seemed to get their answer in early November when the Fighting Irish beat Clemson in a double-overtime thriller to surge towards the top of the college football rankings.
It’s worth noting that Clemson was playing without their star quarterback Trevor Lawrence in that game. With Lawrence, there is a decent chance that Clemson could have and likely would have held off the Irish to remain undefeated themselves.
But Notre Dame walked away from that game victorious and opened up plenty of people’s eyes in the process. With a relatively easy schedule coming down the stretch, it would be shocking to see Notre Dame miss out on the chance to play in the College Football Playoff.
Ohio State
It kind of remains to be seen just how good Ohio State is this season. Outside of their recent matchup against Indiana, which was a lot closer than people thought it was going to be, the Buckeyes haven’t played a very difficult schedule.
The Ohio State schedule between now and the end of the season also isn’t anything to write home about. With Big Ten teams like Michigan and Michigan State down in the dumps this year, Ohio State won’t get to improve their stature among their closest competitors with wins over those types of teams.
But the Buckeyes have one of the best quarterbacks in the country lining up under center for them in Justin Fields. That alone means that they’re always going to have a chance to play with anyone in the country. It also means that they could work their way into the College Football Playoff and make some real noise this season.
Clemson
The 2020 college football season seems like it might end with Clemson fans wondering, “What if…?” As in, what if their generational quarterback Trevor Lawrence hadn’t tested positive for COVID-19 back in October?
Up until that point, it looked like Alabama and Clemson were going to be 1 and 1A for the remainder of the season in terms of rankings. But after Lawrence was sidelined with COVID for a couple of weeks, the Tigers lost to Notre Dame and took a tumble in the standings.
Clemson could very well work their way back into the national title conversation in the coming weeks. But they’re going to have to avoid any missteps between now and the end of the season if they’re ultimately going to end up in the College Football Playoff.

Florida
A loss to Texas A&M back in early October pretty much removed Florida from the national title conversation. But since then, they’ve continued to rack up one win after another to keep themselves alive in the SEC race.
By doing this, they’ve all but guaranteed themselves the chance to play against Alabama in the SEC title game. And if they were able to find a way to win that game, it could really shake things up as far as the college football rankings are concerned.
If you haven’t caught Gators quarterback Kyle Trask in action yet this season, do yourself a favor and check him out. He’s slowly turned himself into a household name this college football season.
Cincinnati and BYU
Unfortunately, there isn’t going to be room for everyone in the College Football Playoff this season. Some of the best college football teams are going to get left out. And that will likely include Cincinnati and BYU.
But don’t sleep on these two dynamic teams. They’ve both come out of nowhere this year to put together stellar seasons that could very well end with them both going undefeated.
That might not be enough to make the College Football Playoff. But they still deserve to be mentioned among the other great college football teams this season.
