Accountant Jobs Salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), accountants earn a median income of $73,560 a year, or $35.37 an hour. Accountant jobs are set to grow at a rate of 7% through 2030. 

Financial analysts earn slightly more than accountants with an annual salary of $83,660, or $40.22 an hour. 

An entry-level accounting job such as an accounting clerk or a bookkeeper pays $42,410 per year, or $20.39 an hour.

Training and Requirements

Top-level accounting careers such as a CPA or financial analyst require a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, statistics, business administration, economics, or a similar field. Depending on the type of position, a more prominent company might prefer a master’s degree, but it’s typically not required for the majority of accounting jobs.

Lower-level positions such as accounting clerks and bookkeepers typically don’t require a college degree, but some college may be helpful in getting hired.

Accounting professionals should have effective communication skills, a solid attention to detail, and superb mathematical skills and reasoning. In addition, they should be organized and manage time well and have strong analytical skills.

It is also helpful to become familiar with financial management software to be able to efficiently prepare reports and financial statements as well as to prepare taxes.
