Cannabidiol is gaining more and more fame, we can find it in the form of a variety of products, such as pills, oil, creams, and even in different edibles. This is because the studies that have been carried out on this substance have demonstrated the great therapeutic benefits of hemp flower that it can provide to those who consume it.

Even so, it is important to know that just as it has its positive effects, it can also have its side effects, which are still under investigation. However, this is commented on because when CBD is mixed with some different compounds or drugs, these can enhance these side effects. So today we will be telling you a lot more about what not to mix with CBD.

What is CBD and how does it work?

First of all, it is necessary to know what cannabidiol is and how it works. CBD is one of the cannabinoids present in cannabis. However, despite being a compound present in cannabis, it is not psychoactive, so it does not generate the common euphoric and perception-changing effect as THC, another cannabinoid in cannabis does.

What happens if CBD is mixed with another substance?

CBD is now used for a wide variety of things and has been gaining prominence as a dietary supplement for many people. This has resulted in it often being mixed with other substances.

According to the WHO, CBD is known to interfere with cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are the main enzymes in the liver that process other medications. So, any drug that is metabolized by the P450 enzyme could be affected by CBD. Many steroids, antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, and beta-blockers, fall into that category.

That is, depending on how much CBD oil you are taking, you could negatively affect the effectiveness of their medications or conversely make them too effective. So below we will be discussing which medications cannabidiol should not be mixed with.

Which drugs should you avoid mixing with CBD?

Here are some of the medications that are not recommended to be mixed with cannabidiol. Many drugs may cause side effects; however, we will comment on the most common ones.

Clobazam + CBD

A study conducted on Epilepsy found that combining cannabidiol and Clobazam could increase the levels of Clobazam in the body, increasing its effect. Patients who consumed both substances experienced increased sedation.

SSRI + CBD

Many people today make use of CBD to treat anxiety, depression, stress, among other similar mental disorders, and indeed cannabidiol has been shown to greatly help alleviate some of these disorders.

The issue is when CBD is mixed with other antidepressant medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which can be Prozac, Paxil, Clexa, among others. Although there is no fully confirmed data, it seems that interactions between CBD and these types of antidepressants are not common. Some isolated reports mixing SSRIs and CBD may increase the risk of hypomania, which is a mild degree of mania.

Those taking SSRIs are advised to consult a medical professional to find out if they can safely combine them with CBD.

Benzodiazepines + CBD

Xanax, better known as alprazolam, is a drug often prescribed for panic and anxiety disorders. Although it is said that taking CBD along with Xanax does not usually have side effects, their combination can increase the side effects of one or both substances.

The most common side effects of mixing CBD and Xanax are drowsiness, confusion, and concentration problems. Consult with your doctor before mixing them, to avoid adverse effects.

Opioids + CBD

Opioids are used to treat deep pain, these are somewhat problematic because they tend to be addictive, and if consumed in large quantities could cause respiratory problems, coma, among others.

Since CBD also produces a sedative effect, mixing it with opioids can lead to excessive sedation, increasing the risk of these dangerous side effects. Therefore, caution is strongly advised when combining CBD and opioids.

To Sum Up

As well as the medications mentioned above, many others would be better not to mix with CBD. However, if you think you must mix anything when consuming CBD, we recommend that you have a prior consultation with a physician.
