Betta Fish is a popular pet, and many people enjoy having them as their first Fish. They can be a great starter pet for someone inexperienced with Fish because they require less attention than other types of pets. However, since Bettas spend most of their time in the water, it’s important to make sure that the environment is clean and safe for them to live in. How often should you change betta fish water?
It is important to change betta fish water for a number of reasons. If the water in your tank becomes cloudy, it could be because bacteria are growing there and eating away at all that they can find. This could include the food you place into the tank or even bits of dead skin (or other debris) that might fall off of them as they go about their daily business—that’s right, your bettas produce waste too.

Also, if you don’t plan to use the water again for anything else, it’s highly recommended not to try and save or re-use old aquarium water as this will also put stress on your bettas’ bodies because now there are harmful chemicals in them which could make them sick (this is especially true if they have been exposed to medications such as antibiotics). Lastly, changing the water can help get rid of excess chlorine/chloramines from tap water which can burn their skin and gills over time. If there are multiple Fish living in an enclosed space, they produce waste, which can quickly become toxic for them, resulting in the poor health of the entire group of pets.
If you don’t plan on changing out all the water at once, it’s recommended that you keep up with smaller changes every few days until 25-30% has been replaced by new filtered/bottled water (no chlorine added). This way, your bettas won’t be shocked by such drastic changes so rapidly, and instead, their bodies can slowly get used to these differences over time. As always, we recommend sticking with bottled distilled/deionized water, but of course, if you plan to use filtered tap water, make sure that it has been treated with dechlorinate first.
How long does it take for tap water to be safe for betta fish?
Well, that all depends on what type of water you have access to. If your tap water is from a well, it can take anywhere from 24-48 hours for the chlorine and chloramines (chlorine/ammonia combo), which could harm your Fish, but if it comes straight out of a drinking fountain at work or school, this may only be safe for around 12 hours.
If your betta tank has been set up long enough to allow beneficial bacteria colonies time to grow, then filtered tap water may not need much extra attention before being transferred into the aquarium as these good little guys will reduce harmful chemicals such as ammonia and nitrites down even further.
