For many people the year 2020 has been one to forget and it has also inspired many people to make the most out of life in the coming years. For people that are wanting to travel and see as much of the world as possible, the United States is a wonderful place to start. There are so many amazing places to see in the huge country of the US, from the city that never sleeps, New York, to places like Texas and Los Angeles, which offer a completely different type of holiday altogether.

A great way of seeing as much of the US as possible is to take a road trip, incorporating as many exciting places as possible. Here are some of the top road trips to try:

Route 66

Probably the most well-known road trip of all is Route 66 which starts in Chicago and finishes in Santa Monica going through eight different states and covering over 2,500 miles. You will need a good few weeks to be able to complete this one if you want to fit in some of the top attractions like Chicago’s live music, the quaint town of Sante Fe and you may even want to take a detour to visit the Grand Canyon while you are in the US. Many locals and tourists also choose to go rafting in the Grand Canyon, which is usually a multiple day trip wherein you’ll go on an expedition through the Colorado river on a raft.

Highway 1 to Big Sur

The Big Sur is one of the most breathtaking routes in the US but it is not for people who are afraid of heights! The Bixby Bridge is 260ft above cliffs and a steep canyon, so if that puts you off, you might want to try one of the alternative routes.

See some of the best bits of South California and finish your trip off in style with a stay in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, where there are all kinds of fun outdoor activities to enjoy.

Coast to Coast, LA to New York

There are plenty of different coast to coast options for US road trips to the US but the LA to NYC route is one of the most popular due to the top destinations you get to see on this route. You will need around four weeks to complete the trip and spend enough time at the great places along the way.

You can go through Las Vegas, New Mexico, Tennessee and Philadelphia on this route and see many of the great US states.

Great River Road

This route spans 3,000 miles and takes you along the Mississippi River, with a mix of cultural and scenic spots to stop at on this journey. New Orleans is a must-see part of the US that this route takes you through.
