Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be able to achieve whatever they set their mind to? Is that something you’d like for yourself? In this article, Joey Klein, author of the upcoming book ‘The Inner Matrix,’ describes how anyone can motivate themselves to do anything.
There are examples all around us of people who have immense drive to accomplish things, whether it be professionally or personally. People who accomplish anything have a few things in common. They are clear on what outcome they want to create, and they are able to motivate themselves to accomplish it. To train drive, you must have a clear vision of what you want to create. To train motivation, you must align your emotions with your desired outcome to move towards your vision.
If you think about what motivates you, it’s always tied to an emotion. A person may be motivated to go to the gym because they feel a sense of power and accomplishment when they work out. They may also be motivated to go to the gym because they feel a sense of shame about how they feel when they look in the mirror. In both examples, motivation is being driven by an emotion to drive you towards the outcome, in this case – going to the gym.

It’s important to note here that when naming an outcome you’d like to create – in this case, going to the gym – it’s important to tie an emotion to that outcome. If you think about going to the gym, consider thinking about what that will mean for you when you go. You might feel a sense of vitality in the body so that you’re able to do activities in life without being winded. Perhaps going to the gym will support you to fit into a pair of jeans you haven’t fit into in a while and then you picture yourself wearing those jeans at a fun party with your friends. It’s important that whatever outcome you name for yourself wakes you up and lights you up when you think about it.
Knowing that emotions are key to your motivation, it’s imperative to also be clear on where to point your motivation because our emotions (and therefore motivation) are fickle. If you relied on motivation alone to drive you, you would be at the whim of how you feel that day. If you woke up in the morning and had no outcome in mind, your motivation might drive you to go to the gym (if you were feeling inspired and joyful), or it might drive you to watch Netflix all day (if you were feeling sad or annoyed). That’s why vision is so important. Naming what you want to accomplish ensures your motivations take you towards that instead of somewhere else.
To accomplish any outcome in life you desire, follow these simple steps.
- Name the outcome you want to create. This could be a vacation you want to go on, an amount of money you want to make, or a way you want to feel with your significant other.
- Once you have named the outcome, close your eyes and imagine that you already have that outcome in your life. Imagine yourself on your holiday in great detail. Imagine what you would be doing with the amount of money you named. Imagine what you would say to your partner if you were in a connected and loving relationship. How would you feel? Allow that emotion to wake you up and light you up.
- Next, brainstorm ways that could move you towards the outcome you named for yourself. It’s a creative process, and there are no wrong answers. Once you have a list, pick the one thing you think is the best option to move you towards that outcome.
- Once you have that one thing named, commit to when you are going to do it. Put it on your calendar, schedule the time. When it comes time to do it, make sure that you focus on the outcome and feel those feelings that wake you up and light you up, and then take action from there.
- Finally, measure and recalibrate. After doing the action for a time, assess whether it took you towards your named outcome or not. If it did, do it again. If it didn’t, go back to your brainstorm list and pick another action that might move you towards the outcome and do Steps 4&5 until the outcome is reached.
The most important thing to remember when motivating yourself to do anything is to make sure that your emotions are aligned. Be sure to “wake yourself up/light yourself up” before you take action, and you can create anything in life you desire.
